Submit Nominations for Human Rights Award by March 16

The Fairfax County Human Rights Commission is accepting nominations for its 2006 Human Rights Awards until Friday, March 16. The awards recognize individuals, nonprofits or businesses that advanced human rights in Fairfax County during last year. To get a nomination form, call 703-324-2953, TTY 703-324-2900 or e-mail michael.cash@fairfaxcounty.gov

Nominees should demonstrate accomplishments to eliminate discrimination on the basis of race, color, sex, religion, national origin, marital status, age or disability in the areas of employment, housing, public accommodations, private education and credit. These accomplishments can be a single significant action, long-term activities or corporate equality programs of an extensive and outstanding nature. The 2006 award recipients, as well as previous years' winners, will be honored at a banquet on May 17.

The Human Rights Commission was established in 1974 by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors to eliminate discrimination on the basis of race, color, sex, religion, national origin, marital status, age or disability in the areas of housing, public accommodations, employment, private education and credit. The Board of Supervisors is scheduled to meet at 9 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 26, and 9:30 a.m. on Monday, March 12, in the Fairfax County Government Center Board Auditorium, 12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax. Supervisors meetings are aired live on Fairfax County Government's Channel 16. A replay of the morning session is aired the next day, Tuesday, at 8 p.m. A replay of the entire meeting is cablecast each Saturday following the board meeting beginning at 10 a.m. Channel 16 also cablecasts the agenda for each board meeting at 8 p.m. on the Friday and Sunday preceding each Monday meeting. The agenda is aired as part of the Channel 16 Bulletin Board on the Monday morning of the board meeting beginning at 8 a.m. A review copy of the final board agenda also is available at county regional libraries on the Friday prior to each Monday meeting.

The Planning Commission is scheduled to meet at 8:15 p.m. on Wednesday, March 7, and Thursday, March 8. (The meeting on March 8 is a public workshop, in accordance with Sect. 15.2-2232 of the Code of Virginia, on the Advertised Capital Improvement Program, Fiscal Year 2008-2012 [with future fiscal years to 2017], with briefings from various county agencies.)
