Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Supports Environmental Excellence and Endorses Strategic Plan to Prevent and End Homelessness.
At its Feb. 26 meeting, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors took action to enhance air and water quality in the county and to prevent and end homelessness.
* Air Quality
Pledging a permanent commitment to emissions-reducing behavior, the Board of Supervisors approved a letter to be sent to the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality from Chairman Gerald E. Connolly. The letter affirms Fairfax County's commitment to the Virginia Air Quality State Implementation Plan (SIP) for the eight-hour federal ozone standard. For the text of the letter and more on the county's voluntary control measures, visit www.fairfaxcounty.gov/news/2007/051.htm For more information about air quality, visit www.fairfaxcounty.gov/airquality.
* Watershed Management
The Board of Supervisors approved watershed management plans for the Difficult Run and Cub Run/Bull Run watersheds. The watershed planning initiative, which will result in 15 watershed management plans for the county, is a giant step forward in the process of restoring and preserving the county's watersheds. The board demonstrated its commitment to water quality by dedicating one cent of real estate tax revenue in the fiscal year 2007 budget for stormwater program initiatives, including watershed planning and implementation. More information on the board's action is available at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/news/2007/051.htm Additional information about watershed planning is available at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/dpwes/watersheds.
These environmental actions directly support the Board of Supervisors' environmental agenda outlined in "Environmental Excellence for Fairfax County - A 20-Year Vision." Information about the plan and the board's fiscal year 2008 environmental agenda is available at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/living/environment/eip/.
* Strategic Plan to Prevent and End Homelessness.
A 10-year strategic plan to prevent and end homelessness in the Fairfax-Falls Church community was endorsed by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. The board also approved establishing a committee to develop the implementation plan for the strategic directions. In 2006, more than 2,000 people in the Fairfax-Falls Church community were homeless, of which more than 700 were children. The strategic plan highlights the challenges facing the community. For more information on the board's action, go to www.fairfaxcounty.gov/news/2007/049.htm For more information about preventing and ending homelessness, including the full strategic plan and other resources, visit www.fairfaxcounty.gov/homeless.
